The following is not an official AHL group, but it being organized by an AHL member. It looks like a great opportunity for older children.
CHILDREN’S CROWN AWARD READING GROUP
Calling all 3rd to 6th grade book lovers! The mission of the Children's Crown Awards is to encourage elementary students to read wholesome and uplifting books by providing lists each year of the best literature.
We will read 20 books throughout the year and then the children will vote on their favorite book in the Spring. We will meet every other week at my house in Rio Rancho to have a short book discussion and then have a game show type activity in which the kids will be divided into teams and be asked questions such as “In what book did a girl lose a red shoe?” The books range in length: nine are less than 40 pgs, ten are between 80-170 pgs and only one is 324 pg. Reading level ranges from RL1-RL6 and parents can read the books aloud or the kids can read them themselves.
I have hosted this type of class for several years and the kids always have a blast. If parents are willing to rotate, we have also tried to tie in an inexpensive hands-on activity relating to the book each meeting. For example, we have made homemade butter in baby jars, cracked coconuts, had a live birds of prey demonstration, etc.
The group will meet on Mondays at 3:00 at my house in Rio Rancho. Dates are as follows: 9/15, 9/29, 10/13, 10/27, 11/10, 11/24, 12/8, 12/22, 1/12, 1/26, 2/9, 2/23, 3/9, 3/30, 4/13, 4/27.
I would like a minimum of 6 kids and a max of 12. You can view the book titles by visiting the Crown Award website here http://www.childrenscrownaward.org/ Be sure you select the Crown Award List for 2008-2009.
About half of the books are available in the libraries but the other half may need to be purchased. They are all available used online at Amazon for about $4 apiece. (I will have a copy of those not available in the libraries that I can lend out but timing will be an issue as we will all be reading the same title in the same two weeks prior to the meeting).
Please contact me at larks@cableone.net ASAP to reserve your spot. Call me at 771-3366 with questions. The only cost is a $29 registration fee that will be split among the families so it will be between $2.50 to $5.00 a student depending on the size of our group.
