[size=3 FAMILY="SERIF"] Crime Prevention information, describing a (rogue) dishonest technique used to steal cars.
[size=2 FAMILY="SERIF"]The scam is quick and fast, some times carried out during the day or late at night.
A rogue tow-truck driver or someone driving a heavy duty truck with a tow bar lift connected pulls up to a car parked on the street, driveway or in a lot and hauls it away to a "chop shop" or even just to another neighborhood.
The individuals involved will steal the tires, rims, batteries, alternators, etc. With the most valuable parts removed, the driver shuttles what is left to a scrap yard. The car is sold by weight, netting the thieves a few hundred dollars more. Car thieves target all types of cars; steal them from neighborhoods, parking lots, street corners. Sometimes they strip the car right in the street, not far from where the theft took place. Other times, they drove the stolen cars to chop shops.[size=2 FAMILY="SERIF"] [size=2 FAMILY="SERIF"]After just a few hours, the stolen car has essentially disappeared.
[size=2 FAMILY="SERIF"]Car thieves can back up, lift a car, and drive off in 15 seconds.
Some tip-offs of a rogue tow-truck driver or someone driving a heavy-duty truck with a tow bar lift connected.
∑[size=2 FAMILY="SANSSERIF"] [size=2 FAMILY="SERIF"]The driver doesn't have identification on the side of the truck or just temporary stickers." ([size=2 FAMILY="SERIF"]The license identification number has to visibly be displayed on the side and the name of the tow company[size=2 FAMILY="SERIF"]).
∑[size=2 FAMILY="SANSSERIF"] [size=2 FAMILY="SERIF"]The auto thieves some times work independently without professional licenses, some claiming to be owners of fictitious towing companies. Many drive trucks with no required identification on the sides of them.
The Southwest Area Command received information from two victims. One vehicle was stolen and an attempt was made to steal the second vehicle.
To avoid being a victim of this type of crime utilize your garage space to park your vehicle.
