TEEN MARDI GRAS! The Rio Rancho Public Library will host Mardi Gras party for teens on February 21, from 6pm-7:30pm in the Loma Colorado Main Library auditorium, 755 Loma Colorado Dr NE. This is the chance to dress up like Bella & Edward (and/or Jacob!), Artemis Fowl, Hermione & Ron... or how about the Clique? Let your imagination, and your favorite book, help you decide what costume to wear!
Pictures will be taken in character at the party, then displayed in the library until the end of February while the public votes for who masqueraded the best. The winning picture will be published in the Rio Rancho Journal and made into a READ poster. Important - bring a copy of the book that inspired you for the picture! Live music during the party will be performed by Rio Rancho High School Jazz Band I, directed by Kurt Schmidt.

Bookworks February 2008 News and Events
Bookworks
4022 Rio Grande NW
Albuquerque, New Mexico 87107 (505) 344-8139 Greetings! February is a month of snow and of sunshine, of Valentines, Presidents and this year, of elections. Here at Bookworks, it is also a month of great events! We have a "wild" mystery, a Pakistani writer with stories of her home, tales of the Crypto Jews in New Mexico, a duo of amazing Hispanic authors, and more! We hope you'll join us for one or more of these events. We'll see you at Bookworks! Maggie Bunting Bookworks Events and Marketing Coordinator 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW Albuquerque, NM 87107 (505) 344-8139 http://www.bkwrks.com [size= ] 7 pm Tuesday, February 12 [size=Planetarium at the NM Museum of Natural History] [size=Anna Sofaer] [size= ]Chaco Astronomy: An Ancient American Cosmology(Ocean Tree Books, $24.95) In New Mexico's Chaco Canyon at summer solstice in 1977, Anna Sofaer encountered an astonishing phenomenon--a single shaft of light bisecting a spiral petroglyph, crafted long ago by the ancestors of today's Pueblo people. This led to thirty years of research on astronomical expressions in the complex architecture and art of an ancient people, and changed our perception of the meaning and purpose of Chaco. The book looks at the people who lived in the San Juan Basin from 850 AD to 1300, and is exciting for anyone interested in the ancient times of the Southwest. 7 pm Tuesday, February 19 The New Jamaica Wild Mystery from Sandi Ault Wild Inferno(Penguin, $23.95) In this sequel to the exciting Wild Indigo, Bureau of Land Management agent Jamaica Wild is back, solving a mystery that involves both a dangerous wildfire and a murder. She must decipher the clues and solve the mystery, all while trying to save the Pueblo people gathered for a ceremony right in the line of the inferno. Join author Sandi Ault as she speaks on her new book and her own experiences responding locally and nationally to wildfires!
7 pm Wednesday, February 20 A Novel of Family and Duty from Benjamin Alire Saenz Names on a Map (Harper, $14.95) The Espejo family of El Paso, Texas, like so many others in America in 1967, is trying to make sense of a rapidly escalating war they feel does not concern them. But when the eldest son, Gustavo, receives a certified letter ordering him to report to basic training, he chooses to flee instead to Mexico. In the process, he sets into motion a series of events that will have catastrophic consequences on the fragile bonds holding the family together. Told with raw power and searing bluntness, and filled with important themes as immediate as today's headlines, Names on a Map is one of Saenz' most important works to date.
1 pm Saturday, February 23 Pakistani Author Bapsi Sidhwa Cracking India(Milkweed, $15.95) Water (Milkweed, $16.95) In Cracking India, the narrator of Sidwha's timely novel about the violent 1947 partition of India is the extremely observant Lenny Sethi, whose family belongs to the Parsee community in Lahore. As a child, a polio victim and a member of a minority, she is the perfect witness to the historic upheaval and is also in many ways a reflection of the author herself. Water follows a young girl left in a widow's ashram in Pakistan who won't accept her fate and moves the other widows to action. Join this fascinating author as she speaks about her life and writing.
7 pm Wednesday, February 27 UNM SUB Ballroom A "A Cross Between Sherman Alexie and Junot Diaz..." Dagoberto Gilb The Flowers (Grove, $24.00) Sonny Bravo is a tender, smart fifteen-year-old who is living with his mother in a large city with intense prejudice. When they are suddenly uprooted to a small apartment building, Los Flores, Sonny sweeps its sidewalks and meets his quirky neighbors and becomes ensnared in their lives. Dagoberto Gilb, in arguably his most powerful work yet, has written an inspiring novel about hate, pain, anger, and love with the wit that has helped make him one of this country's most authentic and original voices.
7 pm Thursday, February 28 Slideshow with Cary Herz New Mexico's Crypto Jews: Image and Memory (UNM Press, $39.95) Crypto-Jews are Sephardic Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism during the Inquisitions centuries ago, and many with this unique heritage are only beginning to learn about their blended backgrounds. In her new book, Cary Herz honors New Mexicans whose ancestors had to practice their faith in private. She sought out symbols that point toward the presence of descendants of Crypto Jews here in NM, and it comes at a perfect time, as DNA tests have recently revealed Jewish heritage in many Hispanic New Mexicans. NEW! Bookworks Sit-and-Sign Series NEW! Come and Go as you please while you meet these great authors! No formal presentation, but they're happy to chat with you during these times below! 3:00-4:30 pm Sat, Feb 9 Craig Holden, Matala (Simon, $22.00) In Holden's newest mystery, a young American on a tour of Italy falls in with a pair of con artists on a dangerous trip across Europe. 6-7 pm Wed, March 12 Ken Kuhlken, The Vagabond Virgins (Poisoned Pen, $24.95) In Kuhlken's fifth mystery featuring the eccentric Hickey family,San Diego PI Alvaro Hickey investigates potential corruption in the 1979 Mexican election. Some great new books: [size=Better: A Surgeon's Notes on Performance][size= by Atul Gawande][size= (Holt Picador, $14.00) A surgeon at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and an assistant professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, Dr. Atul Gawande succeeds in putting a human face on controversial topics like malpractice and global disparities in medical care, while taking an unflinching look at his own failings as a doctor. Critics appreciated his candor, his sly sense of humor, and his skill in examining difficult issues from many perspectives. He conveys his message-that doctors are only human and therefore must always be diligent and resourceful in fulfilling their duties-in clear, confident prose. Most critics' only complaint was that half of the essays are reprints of earlier articles. Gawande's arguments, by turns inspiring and unsettling, may cause you to see your own doctor in a whole new light.]
[size=Christine][size= Falls][size= by Benjamin Black][size= (Holt Picador, $14.00) Christine Falls may be Benjamin Black's debut crime novel, but it's not his first book: Black is the nom de plume of John Banville, the Booker Prize winning author of The Sea. As expected, Banville's lyrical writing stands out (and is more accessible than in The Sea), but the expressive style doesn't eclipse the dark, suspenseful plot. Set during the all-powerful reign of the Catholic Church, the novel touches on themes of sexual repression, grief, and lost opportunities. Readers expecting a fast-paced crime novel may initially be surprised by Banville's slow, deliberate rendering of the plot and the complex characters-but they will certainly look forward to the next novel in this projected series.]
[size=Big Brain: The Origins and Future of Human Intelligence][size= by Gary Lynch and Richard Granger][size= (Domestic, $26.95) Our big brains, our language ability, and our intelligence make us uniquely human. But barely 10,000 years ago--a mere blip in evolutionary time--human-like creatures called "Boskops" flourished in South Africa. They possessed extraordinary features: forebrains roughly 50% larger than ours, and estimated IQs to match--far surpassing our own. Many of these huge fossil skulls have been discovered over the last century, but most of us have never heard of this scientific marvel.Prominent neuroscientists Gary Lynch and Richard Granger compare the contents of the Boskop brain and our own brains today, and arrive at startling conclusions about our intelligence and creativity. Connecting cutting-edge theories of genetics, evolution, language, memory, learning, and intelligence, Lynch and Granger show the implications of large brains on a broad array of fields, from the current state of the art in Alzheimer's and other brain disorders, to new advances in brain-based robots that see and converse with us, and the means by which neural prosthetics-- replacement parts for the brain--are being designed and tested. The authors demystify the complexities of our brains in this fascinating and accessible book, and give us tantalizing insights into our humanity--its past, and its future.]

FEBRUARY 19 & 21
La Resolana:
Lectures with Robert J. Tórrez
7 pm
Salón Ortega
FREE
This presentation will consist of two lectures. The first will review the events that led to the 1846 war between the U.S. and Mexico and the “bloodless” conquest of New Mexico and the little known northern New Mexico insurrection known as the “Revolt of 1847.” Lecture two will emphasize subsequent historical events that demonstrate continued resistance to U.S. occupation. The role of the gorras blancas, mano negra and eventually the alianza will be discussed to emphasize a critical period of NM history, historical events that are characterized by cultural conflict, violence, and ultimately, accommodations that have influenced us to the present.
