Popejoy Hall Press Release

EVERYTHING'S COMING UP ROSES
WHEN TONY AWARD®-WINNING GYPSY ENTERTAINS AT POPEJOY HALL
Albuquerque, NM - November 27, 2007 It's the story of the quintessential stage mother, her dreams for herself and her daughters and the daughter who dared live her own dream. One of the greatest musicals of all time, GYPSY entertains one and all at Popejoy Hall for 5 performances, February 1 through 3. GYPSY comes to New Mexico as part of Popejoy Presents, Broadway in New Mexico series sponsored by Sandia Resort and Casino and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico.

Based on the memoirs of entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee, GYPSY tells the story of Rose, an overbearing stage mother who is determined to make her girls the stars of vaudeville. Rose overwhelmingly favors her younger daughter, June, who headlines the act while Louise is relegated to the chorus. Rose's attention eventually turns to her older daughter, but it is Louise herself who discovers her own talent and becomes a bigger star than Rose ever dreamed possible. Set against the freewheeling days of vaudeville and burlesque, GYPSY explores ambition, jealousy, family relationships and the bittersweet loss of innocence.

GYPSY was written by three virtuosos of American musical theater: Arthur Laurents (book), Jule Styne (music) and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics). The original production, starring Ethel Merman as Mama Rose and directed by Jerome Robbins, was an instant hit when it opened at the Broadway Theatre in 1959. Subsequent revivals garnered a total of three Tony Awards® and featured such talents as Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly and Bernadette Peters in the role of Mama Rose.
GYPSY features some of the biggest songs in Broadway history, including Everything's Coming Up Roses, Rose's Turn, Some People and Together, Wherever We Go.
GYPSY is produced by Phoenix Entertainment. The director is Sam Viverito with Michael Borth as musical director. The creative team includes Michael Hotopp (scenic design), Charlie Morrison (lighting design) and Craig Cassidy (sound design).

Now entering its ninth year of operations, Phoenix Entertainment is an international theatrical producing and management enterprise founded by long-time colleagues Stephen Kane and Michael McFadden. Over two decades of theatrical success and industry partnership have resulted in the Phoenix team delivering thousands of performances of more than 70 live productions on four continents.

Tickets for GYPSY are $50-$25. Patrons may purchase tickets by calling (877) 664-8661. Tickets are sold at UNM Ticket Offices at the UNM Bookstore, Central and Cornell and the UNM Arena (The Pit), University and Avenida César Chávez. Bookstore location hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 am to 6pm and Saturday from noon until 4pm. The Pit location hours are 8:30 to 5pm Monday through Friday. Tickets may also be purchased through UNM by calling 925-5858 or by visiting the UNM ticketing website at http://www.unmtickets.com. Tickets may also be purchased at select Albertson's locations in Albuquerque, Rio Rancho and Santa Fe.

Dear Home Schoolers,

The end of the semester is upon us. I want to take this opportunity to
thank you for bringing your children to visit UNM Art Museum
exhibitions
this fall or for attending the Evening for Educators or other Tuesday
programs. It has been a very busy fall!

For those of you planning to come in the spring, we have a fabulous
line-up
of new exhibitions, most notably "For the Greater Good: New Deal Art in
New
Mexico, 1933-1943" which runs from Feb. 26-May 25. Mark your calendars
now
for the Feb. 26 Evening for Educators program about this commemoration
of
the 75th anniversary of the New Deal. This exhibition will enrich your
social studies curriculum and add a visual dimension to language arts!

All best wishes to you for the holidays and New Year,

EL CAMINO REAL DE TIERRA ADENTRO:
Eniac Martínez Photography Exhibit Opens at the Open Space Visitor Center
______________________________________________________________________________________

Event:  “El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro”: A photographic

exhibition by Mexican artist Eniac Martínez

Date:  January 11 – February 6, 2008

Hours:  9:00AM – 5:00 PM; Tuesday – Sunday; free admission

Location:  Open Space Visitor Center, 6500 Coors Blvd., between Montaño & Paseo del Norte at the end of Bosque Meadows Rd.

Contact:  Joshua Willis; 897-8831; jrwillis@cabq.gov; http://www.cabq.gov/openspace or Emy Kameta; 242-7566; ekameta@sre.gob.mx

The City of Albuquerque, the Mexican Consulate-Albuquerque and the Camino Real International Heritage Center, are pleased to host the photography exhibition: “El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro” (the royal road to the interior lands) by the award-winning Mexican artist, Eniac Martínez. Mayor Martin Chavez says of the show, “It is my privilege to host this show by such a talented artist.” He continued, “It is a stunning representation of how connected we are to our ancestors on this land.”

The Camino Real is one of the oldest continuously used roads in North America, stretching 1500-miles from Mexico City through Santa Fe. Firmly established by Spanish explorers in 1598, it has guided colonists, merchants, missionaries and many others into the “New World” and continues to be an active route today.

Martínez retraces the Camino Real and documents the life, culture and traditions existing along the road today in 50 black and white panoramic photographs. Martínez says of his work “It is possible to appreciate how centuries in the same space really coexist. For that reason the photographic images show the sensation of the passage of time. What I did was to photograph the people and the living parts along the entire route to show how different cultures are mixed with time.” He states, “My purpose has been to make a photographic essay that shows the present conditions of the main points of the interest of the Camino Real, its inevitable transformation and those elements that have significance to its contemporary inhabitants.”

The exhibition also includes “Portrait in Sound of an Ancient Road: Stories and Songs of the El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro.” The soundscape component was written and produced by Jack Loeffler, renowned aural historian and musicologist.

Professor Enrique Lamadrid, cultural historian and professor of Spanish at UNM,

will offer a series of presentations exploring the stories, traditions and history of the Camino Real. Visit http://www.cabq.gov/openspace for a schedule of talks.

El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro opens January 11 at the Open Space Visitor Center and will be on exhibit until February 6, 2008. Admission is free.
