Dear Fundamentals family,

This email is just to let you that we are NOT moving!  There is a real estate sign out in front of our building that is actually for a small office space on the west end of our facility.  The real estate firm made a mistake and placed the sign right in front of our mailbox, but it should be moving west this week!  We just wanted to make sure everyone knows we're not going anywhere!  Thanks for being part of the Fundamentals family!

Sincerely,

The Fundamentals Staff

The Box LAST WEEKEND

LAUGHING WILD

written by
Christopher Durang]

March 7 -16

Fridays and Saturdays 8:00pm
Sundays 6:00pm

BUY TICKETS

Two Lives, One Can of Tuna
-- A woman smacks a man in the head at the supermarket because she thinks he's blocking her from buying a can of tuna. There's your plot, folks. Now where's your ticket? Laughing Wild, a play written by Christopher Durang and directed by Kristin Berg, examines the lives and trials of two urban strangers brought together by one aisle 7-sized act of violence. Stress makes us do these things, laughing helps us forget them. And you'll laugh a lot. Laughing Wild runs through March 16 at the Box Performance Space (Lomas and 12th Street) with shows on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. Tickets are $12 general admission and $10 for students, seniors and members of the Albuquerque Theater Guild. , is an outrageous comedy about the high anxiety world we live in. Laughing Wild stars Heather Yeo and Blake Catherwood as a woman and a man who drive each other crazy over a can of tuna fish at their local supermarket. Sounds a little far-fetched, doesn’t it? But it’s always the relatively mundane incident that can set people off these days.

Tickets General Admission $12.00
Students, Seniors and Albuquerque Theatre Guild Members $10.00

The Rio Rancho Police Department’s canine unit is about 10 years old and it presently has 2 dogs.  A third acquisition is set-up, but awaiting sufficient funding.

The New Mexico Jazz Festival, a collaborative project of the Outpost Performance Space, The Lensic, and the Santa Fe Jazz Foundation presents the third in a series of three New Mexico Jazz Festival March Eventsw: The Charles Lloyd New Quartet. Saxophone legend, Charles Lloyd, is credited by many musicians with anticipating the World Music movement by decades. He first came to prominence in 1960 as music director of the Chico Hamilton Quintet and later that decade, with his quartet that introduced the young Keith Jarrett on piano, Jack DeJohnette on drums and Cecil McBee on bass. Their recording, Forest Flower: Live at Monterey, (1966) made history as one of the first jazz recordings to sell a million copies. Lloyd was voted "Jazz Artist of the Year" by DownBeat Magazine in 1967 and that same year, the group was invited to tour the world. Their performances in the Far East, the Soviet Union, and the Eastern Bloc nations of Europe often marked the first time these audiences had heard an American jazz group live. Incorporating avant-garde or "free jazz" with elements of non-Western music, impressionistic harmonies and occasional rock rhythms, the group echoed the free spirit of the psychedelic 1960s and had a major influence on artists like Miles Davis and other jazz luminaries. Lloyd describes his music as "having always danced on many shores." Charles Lloyd has been recording with ECM Records since 1989 and has assembled groups with only the "best of the best"—musicians including Zakir Hussain, Brad Mehldau, Ralph Abercrombie, Geri Allen, Bobo Stenson, Billy Higgins, Billy Hart and Dave Holland. At 67, when most individuals are thinking of ways to slow down and kick back, Charles Lloyd has shifted to a higher gear. Following on his tradition of playing with only the best, he hired three of the finest young players in jazz today— pianist, Jason Moran; bassist, Reuben Rogers; and drummer, Eric Harland— to form a quartet for his Spring 2007 European tour and latest ECM release. This concert made possible with support from The Judith McBean Foundation.

Dapp Theory
blends "contemporary funk, groove and hip-hop into jazz with such seamless, casual precision it’s almost freaky." (LA Weekly) Awarded the Chamber Music America "New Works" commission in 2006 and voted "Rising Star Keyboardist" by DownBeat Magazine in 2004, leader, Canadian-born pianist/composer, Andy Milne is one of the most respected young voices in jazz today. Milne has toured and recorded with Ravi Coltrane, Ralph Alessi, Carlos Ward and Carla Cook and has collaborated with a range of artists including Sekou Sundiata, Avery Brooks, Bruce Cockburn, Geri Allen, and Dianne Reeves. He moved to NYC in 1991 when Steve Coleman, his teacher at the Banff Centre for Fine Arts, invited him to join his core unit, Five Elements. M-BASE associates Cassandra Wilson and Greg Osby invited Milne to perform with them as well. Milne recorded 12 CDs with Coleman and remained a member of all of his projects until 1997. In 1998 Milne formed Dapp Theory. Since then, the band has evolved and built a loyal following, largely through their commitment to grass-roots touring, an ideology more often associated with rock ’n’ roll bands. Dapp Theory’s unique style blends influences ranging from Joni Mitchell & KRS One to Thelonious Monk & Van Halen. Their last CD, Y’all Just Don’t Know released in 2003, included an ambitious collaboration with folk-rock icon Bruce Cockburn. Their next project is scheduled for release in early 2008. Dapp Theory also features percussive poet John Moon; saxophonist Loren Stillman; bassist Chris Tordini; and drummer Kenny Grohowski.

Holly Hofmann
has been called "the most authoritative, swinging flutist in jazz today." Hofmann was five when she started playing jazz and after earning degrees in classical flute studies, she returned to jazz full-time. She studied with Frank Wess and Slide Hampton in New York and collaborated with Lionel Hampton, Mundell Lowe, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Regina Carter, and the late bass legend Ray Brown. Hofmann also spent time in San Diego working with bassist Bob Magnusson and her now-husband, pianist Mike Wofford at the Horton Grand Hotel where she booked a four night national jazz program that ran from 1989-1996, presenting hundreds of jazz artists from Diana Krall to Cassandra Wilson to Joe Henderson. Hofmann and Wofford married in 2000 and from 2002-06 they toured and recorded with Flutology, with Frank Wess and Ali Ryerson. Currently living in San Diego, in 2007 they recorded a duo CD, Live at the Athenaeum. Pianist, Mike Wofford, has appeared on over a hundred recordings as a sideman and leader. He continues to be one of the most in-demand sidemen and arrangers in jazz. This year alone he’s worked with Charles McPherson, Kevin Mahogany, Houston Person, Joe LaBarbera, James Moody, Phil Woods, Frank Wess and Red Holloway. He has received critical acclaim for his solo piano series, Live at Maybeck, and was deemed "one of the outstanding pianists of our time" by Downbeat Magazine. Early in his career, Wofford performed with the legendary Lighthouse All-Stars and the bands of Shelly Manne, Teddy Edwards, Chet Baker, Bud Shank and Shorty Rogers. In the 1970s, he was pianist and music director for Sarah Vaughan also touring with Harry "Sweets" Edison, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Zoot Sims and the Benny Carter Orchestra. In 1989, he became pianist and music director for Ella Fitzgerald until her retirement in 1992. Benny Golson called him, "… the essence of a jazz pianist in the purest and most concentrated form." Accompanying Hofmann and Wofford are New Mexico’s own talented rhythm section stalwarts, Michael Olivola, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums.

The Hofmann-Wofford Quartet will also perform in Santa Fe at the Friends of Santa Fe Jazz, Friday, April 11. For info, contact

The Stu MacAskie Trio
plays an eclectic mix, all of which falls under the rubric of contemporary jazz. Drawing from the Great American Songbook, the jazz canon, and from MacAskie’s original compositions, the trio looks forward as it stays rooted in the jazz tradition. Pianist Stu MacAskie emigrated to New Mexico ten years ago after an eight year stint in New York City. He has worked with a long list of jazz luminaries including Eric Alexander, Bill Watrous, Antonio Hart, and Walt Weiskopf. In the pop world his credits include Hassan Hakmoun, Patti Page and (speaking of eclectic) the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus. The Trio has worked steadily at Scalo Northern Italian Grill for the last two years. Drummer Cal Haines recently returned to being a mainstay in New Mexico’s jazz circle after spending ten years in California. Bassist Michael Glynn was an integral part of the Seattle jazz scene before his recent move to New Mexico. Guest saxophonist, Glenn Kostur is the former Music Director for Maynard Feguson, and current Director of Jazz Studies at the University of New Mexico.

Join Bookworks, the UNM English Department, and the Flying Star Cafe to

Learn how making your life more locally centered will benefit both YOU and the ECONOMY with bestselling author and environmentalist and former New Yorker staff writer

Bill McKibben

7 pm Wed, Mar 26

Student Union Building Ballroom A and B, University of New Mexico (north of Popejoy Hall, on the UNM Campus)

Buy Your Book in Advance at Bookworks and get PREFERRED SEATING for the event!

Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future (Holt, $14.00)

In this powerful and provocative manifesto, Bill McKibben offers the biggest challenge in a generation to the prevailing view of our economy.

Deep Economy makes the compelling case for moving beyond "growth" as the paramount economic ideal and pursuing prosperity in a more local direction, with regions producing more of their own food, generating more of their own energy, and even creating more of their own culture and entertainment. Our purchases need not be at odds with the things we truly value, McKibben argues, and the more we nurture the essential humanity of our economy, the more we will recapture our own. (from http://www.billmckibben.com]

Bookworks would like to invite our fellow businesses, city government officials, and residents of our community to hear this former New Yorker columnist as he eloquently outlines his ideas of shifting our economic paradigm to begin thinking locally.

This event is FREE and open to the public! For PREFERRED SEATING and a place in the signing line, you can buy your book in advance at Bookworks, at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd NW. Call us at 344-8139 for more information!
Please feel free to pass along this invitation, and see below for a short biography of McKibben.

In addition to this event, from 5-6:30 pm in the same location, 1 Sky New Mexico is sponsoring a free Climate Workshop Training that will empower attendees to put some of McKibben's climate change ideas into practice. For more information and to RSVP for this event, visit http://www.1skynewmexico.org/events/climate-activism-training-and-lecture

Bill McKibben is an American environmentalist and writer. His first book, The End of Nature, was published in 1989 by Random House after being serialized in the New Yorker. It is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change. His next book, The Age of Missing Information, was published in 1992. It is an account of an experiment: McKibben collected everything that came across the 100 channels of cable tv on the Fairfax, Virginia system (at the time among the nation's largest) for a single day. He spent a year watching the 2,400 hours of videotape, and then compared it to a day spent on the mountaintop near his home. Subsequent books include Hope, Human and Wild, about Curitiba, Brazil and Kerala, India, which he cites as examples of people living more lightly on the earth; The Comforting Whirlwind: God, Job, and the Scale of Creation, which is about the Book of Job and the environment; Maybe One, about human population; Long Distance: A Year of Living Strenuously, about a year spent training for endurance events at an elite level; Enough, about what he sees as the existential dangers of genetic engineering; Wandering Home, about a long solo hiking trip from his current home in the mountains east of Lake Champlain in Ripton, Vermont back to his longtime neighborhood of the Adirondacks.
His most recent book, Deep Economy: the Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future, was published in March 2007. It addresses what the author sees as shortcomings of the growth economy and envisions a transition to more local-scale enterprise.

Bill is a frequent contributor to various magazines including The New York Times, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, Orion Magazine, Mother Jones, The New York Review of Books, Granta, Rolling Stone, and Outside. He is also a board member and contributor to Grist Magazine.

Bill has been awarded Guggenheim and Lyndhurst Fellowships, and won the Lannan Prize for nonfiction writing in 2000. He has honorary degrees from Green Mountain College, Unity College, Lebanon Valley College and Sterling College.

The Rio Rancho Police Department’s canine unit is about 10 years old and it presently has 2 dogs.  A third acquisition is set-up, but awaiting sufficient funding.

Hero was purchased at the age of 1 year from a breeder in Germany.  He arrived with some basic training and preparation, and then he subsequently underwent additional intensive training to learn the skills needed for his work with the police.  He and Officer Willey trained extensively together to get to know each other and to learn to work as a team, and they still attend weekly sessions with the Bernalillo Police Canine Unit to keep their skills and knowledge current.

Police dogs are used in several capacities.  Hero’s activities include narcotics patrol, tracking suspects, building searches and working with the SWAT team.

I would really appreciate it if you would pass this on to those in your home school organization.

The National Atomic Museum is looking for 15 1st-3rd graders to participate in a science class in our children's area on Friday, March 28th from 2-3 PM.  The program would be about basic physics (force/energy/matter), and the child(ren) and parents would be admitted to the museum free of charge.  We have a potential donor coming to the museum who is interested in our educational programs, so the children are going to be observed during the lesson.

If anyone is interested in participating, email Jessica Coyle at jlcoyle@sandia.gov.  Please state the number of children participating in the lesson and the total number of people coming so that I can give the information to the front desk.  We are only able to accommodate 15 children, so attendance will be based on who emails first.  I will contact people starting Monday to let them know about attendance.

Thank you so much!
