NEXT ALBUQUERQUE SONGWRITER SERIES SLATED FOR MARCH 6, 2008
The monthly Albuquerque Songwriter Series would like to thank Myra and her staff at Slate Street Café for being so gracious during our inaugural songwriter session in their fabulous Wine Loft on February 7. A splendid time was had by all and we look forward to the next session on March 6. The session runs 7 - 9 PM and admission is free. Slate Street Café is located at 515 Slate NW Albuquerque, NM (one block north of Lomas between 5th and 6th) 505-224-2817.

Presented by the City of Albuquerque Music Office, part of the Mayor's Economic Development Department, the monthly songwriter series features a changing lineup of local songwriters and takes place the first Thursday of each month. Featured Songwriters for March are: TOMMY ESTES (who performs both solo and with Chris Dracup, among others), classical guitarist and composer AARON LEWIS and ALICIA ULTAN of the duo Charmed.

The goal of the Albuquerque Songwriter Series is to showcase songwriters from all genres of music by presenting an evening of exploring song craft in an intimate setting.  Each month the featured songwriters join each other on stage with host Rob Martinez, Jr. to take turns playing original songs, talk about their origins, how they came to write them, their influences and challenges.  Songs range from completed pieces to works in progress.

Mr. Martinez is a songwriter and musician with deep local ties. As well as performing solo and with local outfit The Daddy Os he is a member of New Mexico’s legendary traditional band Los Reyes de Albuquerque. Mr. Martinez is also a member of the Mayor’s Albuquerque Music Advisory Board (AMAB).  James de Champlon, also a member of the AMAB and a partner in local record label Little Kiss Records, coordinates the monthly series with City Music Liaison Tom Frouge

“This series is not about performance, nor is it about perfect voices or playing.” says Mr. Frouge. “It is about the art of song craft, and is not an open mic presentation. The stripped down setting, whether the songs are rock, rap, jazz, classical, folk, world, Latin or country, will showcase the compositions presented as they were written, on a single instrument.  It will allow the Albuquerque songwriting community the opportunity to display their wares to other songwriters perhaps learn from one another and, hopefully help nourish that part of the music business in Albuquerque.  It will also allow the community at large to get to know these artists through their songs.”

APRIL FEATURED SONGWRITERS (04/03/08):

DANIEL C. BOLING
CHRIS DRACUP
KIMO

Please note: the songwriter series is NOT an open mic. For more information on the series and the possibility of participation please contact Tom Frouge, Music Liaison, City of Albuquerque Economic Development Department, Mayor’s Office at 505-771-3166 or tfrouge@cabq.gov

[size=PARTY AT THE BOX!

This Saturday, to celebrate the one-year anniversary of The Box, we will have a big party—and everyone is invited! There will be food and drink, and we will have performances throughout the evening, showcasing some of our past shows from 2007. Numbers from The Aristocats and Schoolhouse Rock]
, and improv from the Gryffindorks, the Copyrights, No Apparent Reason, Blackout, and the One Night Stanleys are some of the entertainment we will present. The party will start at 6:00pm and go late into the evening, so come out and celebrate with us.

Also, we are currently looking for 2008 Angels, so if you would like to donate, please download the form and mail it or bring it with you. We will also have forms at the party. We are going to hit a little bit of a rough patch these next couple of month, and Angels will really help to see us through it. Don't worry—we are not going anywhere—it’s just March and April that are going to be hard.

Thank you to everyone who has supported The Box and helped keep The Box open.]
Doug and Kristin
OPENING NEXT WEEKEND!!!

March 7 -16

Fridays and Saturdays 8:00pm
Sundays 6:00pm

In the first section of the play, a Woman, played by UNM Alumni and Blackout Company member Heather Yeo, enters and embarks on an increasingly frenetic (and funny) recital of the perils and frustrations of daily life in urban America—waiting in line, rude taxi drivers, inane talk shows and the selfish people who block the aisles in supermarkets. In particular she is incensed by a man
who prevented her from buying a can of tuna fish by standing in her way—and whom she attacked in a fit of pique. In the second monologue ("Seeking Wild") the Man, played by Blake Catherwood who directed last year's Savage in Limbo at Sol Arts, appears, and while the subjects on which he expounds (nuclear waste, the rigidity of the Catholic Church], particularly in sexual matters, the threat of AIDS) may be
broader in context, he also dwells on an incident in a supermarket, when a strange woman hit him over the head in the tuna fish aisle. In the final portion of the play ("Dreaming Wild") the two protagonists meet at last and reenact the supermarket incident via six varying interpretations; tell us more fully of their overlapping dreams; and then launch into an explosively funny parody of a talk show. In the end the two find an accommodation of sorts as they come together at the Harmonic Convergence in Central Park—both still hoping to instill a sense of optimism and purpose in their lives, but both still skeptical that they will succeed in doing so.
Tickets General Admission $12.00
Students, Seniors and Albuquerque Theatre Guild Members $10.00

“The wealth of wildlife habitat found here in Albuquerque is unmatched!  The environmental education training that the Open Space Division provides is a wonderful way to learn about our marvelous Natural World[size=.]”
Mayor Martin J. Chávez

We often need to be reminded just how important wild places are by people who have dedicated their lives to the preservation of wilderness.  The power of imagination suffers as we commute to and from our homes to work day after day.  Our daily routines play out in front of flat screen monitors and TV’s, behind a steering wheel, or as we run the world from our ergonomic swivel chairs.  These routines drain the batteries and dull our senses.  The good news is there is still a place we can go to rekindle our natural vitality for living!  We may turn towards Nature.  Nature can revive our ability to take time, listen, speak softly and track our love of the outdoors into the forest, down to the river or up the mountain.  On March 6, 2008 at the Open Space Visitor Center (OSVC) wildlife tracker Casey McFarland will use his skill as a teacher and tracker to remind us just how important our Earth really is.

Rekindling the power of observation in each living, breathing person is the objective of Casey McFarland.  Casey approaches Nature with a sense of reverence.  Casey’s skills as a wildlife tracker have led him all over the planet tracking predators such as the stealthy Pine Martin to our native Mountain Lions here in New Mexico.  Yet as you speak to Casey you get a sense that predators are not the only intriguing creatures he has become familiar with in the wild.   “Tracking provides us the opportunity to learn about all manner of critter from caribou to kangaroo rats.  In a decade of teaching I have found that wildlife tracking rapidly builds ‘connection to place’ by allowing people to begin to see and read the activities of our wild neighbors.  What was once invisible to the eye becomes a doorway to powerful recognition of the importance of biodiversity.  During my talk emphasis will be placed on using wildlife tracking as a means of combating ‘nature deficit disorder’ (Richard Louve), how we learn the skill of tracking and its benefits for adults as well as children, and how connection to place is formulated by personal experience.”  Casey demonstrates the importance of looking into nature holistically with eyes that reveal the intricate patters that define wilderness.  Casey seeks to instill in each person an invigorated spirit and a set of eyes that can penetrate the veil of modernity so that we may perceive nature with respect.  His talk will stress the responsibility adults have in teaching a love for nature to their children, and how adults may, too, reconnect with their own youth by embracing the tracker buried in each of us.  To learn more about Casey visit his website http://wildlifetrackingsouthwest.com

Getting outside is the bottom line here.  Casey will teach us how to detect and track animals in their natural setting.  His talk will begin with a slide show where he shares some of his own experiences and begins to train us to see with increased awareness.  He will then take the group into the field for a brief tracking excursion in the Bosque adjacent to the Open Space Visitor Center.  His lecture and demonstration will last approximately 2.5 hours.  Interested individuals are asked to RSVP by e-mailing: jrwillis@cabq.gov or by calling the OSVC at 897-8831.  The beautiful OSVC is located at 6500 Coors Boulevard between Montaño and Paseo del Norte at the end of Bosque Meadows Rd.  Please come and enjoy this youthful presentation.
