Popejoy presents:
HMS Pinafore
Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 7:30pm
Aboard the HMS Pinafore, a hilarious tale of love, hypocrisy and mistaken identities unravels when the Captain’s daughter falls secretly in love with a common sailor. Pledged by her father to marry the mighty Sir Joseph Porter, young Josephine finds herself hopelessly torn between love and duty. But a remarkable twist of fate changes all when a long-kept secret is let slip, somersaulting our heroes into a heady climax of fun, frivolity and fortune. Performed by the exceptional Carl Rosa Opera Company with full orchestra, HMS Pinafore promises to be another delightful excursion into the lunacy that is Gilbert & Sullivan.

Greetings from the National Environmental Education Foundation!
As the contact person for your local homeschooling organization, you are invited to participate in the National Environmental Education Foundation’s signature program for K-12th grade students: National Environmental Education (EE) Week (http://www.eeweek.org).
EE Week gives you the opportunity to incorporate environmental learning into your homeschooling lessons. Made possible by Canon, EE Week promotes understanding and protection of the natural world by actively engaging K-12th grade students and educators in an inspired week of environmental learning and service before Earth Day. This year's EE Week will be held April 13 - 19 and is expected to involve over 2,000 schools, nature centers, zoos, museums, and aquariums and over 5 million students!
The following activities, selected from our Get Involved webpage, can be easily integrated into your homeschooling curricula in honor of EE Week:
Use tips from our online Nature Journaling Blog to help your children create nature journals in your very own backyard. Create a backyard wildlife habitat with your child. For ideas from the National Wildlife Federation, publisher of Ranger Rick, see the Certified Wildlife Habitat website. Use suggestions from our Green Reading List to incorporate environmental stories into your language arts lessons. Take a group of homeschooled students to your local zoo, aquarium, or nature center. Enter your state at http://www.aza.org/FindZooAquarium/ for links to members of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association.
These are just a few suggested ways to participate; homeschooling parents are welcome to take part in EE Week by conducting any type of environmental education activities. If you would like to participate, please register your activities at http://www.eeweek.org/register to gain national recognition for your efforts. Registration is absolutely free and only takes a few minutes, but gives our staff insight into how EE Week is being celebrated and supported all over the country.
I have included some sample language for EE Week at the bottom of this email. Please consider promoting EE Week to your local networks of educators. If you would prefer not to receive e-mail updates about National Environmental Education Week, simply reply to this e-mail and I will remove you from our e-mail list.
Please be in touch if there are any additional ways we can support your EE efforts.
Best wishes,
Karen Schultz

HMS Pinafore and Pop Culture
Songs from HMS Pinafore appear in many movies and tv shows. For example, one of the characters on Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark sings HMS songs every time he is happy. Songs from this musical also appear on Star Trek, The Good Shepherd, and Leave It To Beaver.
Much of the HMS Pinafore score appeared on the second episode of The Simpsons's fifth season. On this episode, Sideshow Bob holds Bart and his family hostage on their houseboat. He sails down the river with Bart, to kill him where the police are less likely to catch him. In desperation, Bart makes one last request, trying to stall for time. Bart asks Bob to sing the entire score of HMS Pinafore. By the time Bob has finished, the houseboat has run aground and Bob is arrested.
You don't have to avoid the police, attempt murder or stall to save your life to enjoy these songs, though. You can enjoy them in Popejoy Hall on April 16, when the Carl Rosa Company performs HMS Pinafore.

Annie Overseas
Although it premiered in the United States, the hit Broadway musical Annie has been produced in 17 other countries on six continents. From Australia to Japan, and Sweden to Zimbabwe, productions of Annie have become enormously popular.
Similarly, the song "Tomorrow" from the musical has become one of the staples of Broadway music. Characters on over 30 various television shows and movies have sung or quoted from this song. In fact, just about anyone you meet on the street will recognize the first line of the song, even if they do not know where it comes from.
Annie will be at Popejoy Hall April 4-6.

SCHOOL TIME SHOWS
SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK LIVE! JR.

Thursday April 10th 10:00am and 1:30pm
Friday April 11th 10:00am and 1:30pm
Tom, a school teacher nervous about his first day of teaching, tries to relax by watching TV. Suddenly, the Schoolhouse Rock bunch appear in his rec room and proceed to show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through beloved Schoolhouse Rock songs that cover a variety of subjects: math, science, history and grammar.
A loose, revue-like structure allows for a great deal of flexibility in staging and cast size from number to number as well as for the entire show. Set and costume design can be as simple or complex as your budget or imagination allow. And because most of the songs are so familiar and easy to learn, rehearsals are bound to be a snap!
Like the classic television series, Schoolhouse Rock Live! Junior is a hip, entertaining and educational treat that shows young people that learning can be as fun as you choose to make it.

Will the CIA track down the flying saucer before it can land? Is there any hope for Albuquerque in this musical comedy War of the Worlds? Inspired by the 50s classic Earth v.
