Holly Hofmann has been called “the most authoritative, swinging flutist in jazz today.” Hofmann was five when she started playing jazz and after earning degrees in classical flute studies, she returned to jazz full-time. She studied with Frank Wess and Slide Hampton in New York and collaborated with Lionel Hampton, Mundell Lowe, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Regina Carter, and the late bass legend Ray Brown. Hofmann also spent time in San Diego working with bassist Bob Magnusson and her now-husband, pianist Mike Wofford at the Horton Grand Hotel where she booked a four night national jazz program that ran from 1989-1996, presenting hundreds of jazz artists from Diana Krall to Cassandra Wilson to Joe Henderson. Hofmann and Wofford married in 2000 and from 2002-06 they toured and recorded with Flutology, with Frank Wess and Ali Ryerson. Currently living in San Diego, in 2007 they recorded a duo CD, Live at the Athenaeum. Pianist, Mike Wofford, has appeared on over a hundred recordings as a sideman and leader. He continues to be one of the most in-demand sidemen and arrangers in jazz. This year alone he’s worked with Charles McPherson, Kevin Mahogany, Houston Person, Joe LaBarbera, James Moody, Phil Woods, Frank Wess and Red Holloway. He has received critical acclaim for his solo piano series, Live at Maybeck, and was deemed “one of the outstanding pianists of our time” by Downbeat Magazine. Early in his career, Wofford performed with the legendary Lighthouse All-Stars and the bands of Shelly Manne, Teddy Edwards, Chet Baker, Bud Shank and Shorty Rogers. In the 1970s, he was pianist and music director for Sarah Vaughan also touring with Harry “Sweets” Edison, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Zoot Sims and the Benny Carter Orchestra. In 1989, he became pianist and music director for Ella Fitzgerald until her retirement in 1992. Benny Golson called him, “… the essence of a jazz pianist in the purest and most concentrated form.” Accompanying Hofmann and Wofford are New Mexico’s own talented rhythm section stalwarts, Michael Olivola, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums.

The Hofmann-Wofford Quartet will also perform in Santa Fe at the Friends of Santa Fe Jazz, Friday, April 11. For info, contact lee217@comcast.net.

The Stu MacAskie Trio plays an eclectic mix, all of which falls under the rubric of contemporary jazz. Drawing from the Great American Songbook, the jazz canon, and from MacAskie’s original compositions, the trio looks forward as it stays rooted in the jazz tradition. Pianist Stu MacAskie emigrated to New Mexico ten years ago after an eight year stint in New York City. He has worked with a long list of jazz luminaries including Eric Alexander, Bill Watrous, Antonio Hart, and Walt Weiskopf. In the pop world his credits include Hassan Hakmoun, Patti Page and (speaking of eclectic) the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus. The Trio has worked steadily at Scalo Northern Italian Grill for the last two years. Drummer Cal Haines recently returned to being a mainstay in New Mexico’s jazz circle after spending ten years in California. Bassist Michael Glynn was an integral part of the Seattle jazz scene before his recent move to New Mexico. Guest saxophonist Glenn Kostur is the former Music Director for Maynard Feguson, and current Director of Jazz Studies at the University of New Mexico.

Crystal Darkness
Be a Part of the Campaign that is Sweeping the Nation!

On Thursday, April 10, 2008, the communities of New Mexico will fight back against Meth. In an historic and unprecedented event a 30-minute documentary titled “Crystal Darkness” will air in a roadblock which means it will be broadcast simutaneously on several stations in the area including KOB TV, KRQE TV, WB19, KASA Fox TV and Telemundo. A simultaneous training program will be introduced into all the schools in New Mexico to educate our children. Follow up recovery efforts, fundraising and awareness raising could make this the most important community campaign to hit our state in decades. For more information, contact Tony McConaghy, <shamrocksupply@qwest.net>, Paul Jew or Daniel C. Higbie.

La Resolana:
Healing with Herbs & Rituals –
A Mexican Tradition by Eliseo “Cheo” Torres

6 pm – 9 pm
Salón Ortega
Free

One of the great traditions of folk medicine and healing in the Southwest is Mexican Folk Healing, and the fact that has largely been transmitted as oral history makes it all the more remarkable. Knowledge of plants, many of them indigenous to the Southwest, and their uses, can help one better understand how folk remedies may or may not work, and how the combination of rituals and folk medicine can have implication for modern medicine. This presentation will include a brief description of the “hot” popular herbs and other traditional herbs and their usage for illnesses such as hypertension, stress, arthritis, etc.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BOSQUE BLUES CONCERT AT LOMA COLORADO MAIN LIBRARY (RIO RANCHO PUBLIC LIBRARY)

Event: Bosque Blues Band Concert

Date & Time: April 24, 2008 6:30 p.m.

Location: Loma Colorado Main Library Auditorium

755 Loma Colorado Drive NE, Rio Rancho, NM 87124

Admission:  Free for all ages. No tickets required.

Information: Adult Services Dept., (505) 891-5013, Ext. 3030

Description: FIREHOUSE BLUES The Loma Colorado Main Library Auditorium will be the locale for the debut public performance by Bosque Blues, featuring Shawn Williams and Eden Copping. Both musicians, who are Bernalillo firemen, have been playing in numerous bands for many years, but discovered a common interest in blues music and started playing together in 2007.

Eden was born and bred in the western suburbs of Melbourne, Australia.  Largely self-taught, he began playing guitar at a young age, and in addition to rock and metal styles, he played classical.  His major influences include B. B. King and Mark Knopfler, and he has played in many bands that covered a wide range of musical genres.  After moving to his wife’s native Minnesota in 2000, he found the winter climate much too cold for his liking, and the couple relocated to New Mexico the following year.

Shawn was raised in Tucson, Arizona and played several instruments while growing up such as violin, trombone, piano, mandolin and guitar.  After learning to play the harmonica (he now owns one of every key) in 2002, he developed a love for blues music.  He also currently plays in another band, called Code 29, whose style is that of more classic and contemporary rock.  He met his wife, Jill in Tucson, and moved to New Mexico in 1998.  Major influences include Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy and Muddy Waters.

Audience members can look forward to soulful renditions of songs composed by masters like B. B. King, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Jeff Healy, Howlin’ Wolf and Stevie Ray Vaughan, plus a brief harmonica lesson.

The concert is free, but tickets are required and are available at the Loma Colorado Main Library Adult Services Desk.
