Mint director to hold coin forum in Albuquerque

Associated Press - April 2, 2008 6:15 PM ET

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) - U.S. Mint director Ed Moy says America's coins are public art that people get to see every day.

He says they also can be educational -- such as coins with presidents' pictures or the program to honor each of the 50 states on the backs of quarters.

Moy and Governor Richardson will launch New Mexico's quarter Monday at the state Capitol in Santa Fe.

Moy also will be in Albuquerque for a coin collectors' forum open to everyone.

Next on NOVA: "Cracking the Maya Code"

http://www.pbs.org/nova/mayacode

Tuesday, April 8 at 8 p.m.
Broadcast in high definition where available.
Check your local listings as dates and times may vary.

The ancient Maya civilization of Central America left behind an
intricate and mysterious hieroglyphic script, carved on monuments,
painted on pottery, and drawn in handmade bark-paper books. For
centuries, scholars considered it too complex to ever understand
until recently, when an ingenious series of breakthroughs finally
cracked the code and unleashed a torrent of new insights into the
Mayas' turbulent past. For the first time, NOVA presents the epic
inside story of how the decoding was done in "Cracking the Maya
Code."

Here's what you'll find on the companion Web site:

White Sands opens trinity site tour Saturday (6:24 p.m.)

Article Launched: 04/04/2008 06:25:14 AM MDT

Sun-News report

LAS CRUCES — An open house at Trinity Site, where the world's first atomic bomb was detonated, will be conducted from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday.
Trinity Site, at the northern end of White Sands Missile Range, is about 170 miles northeast of Las Cruces.

There is no charge for the public to attend. At the site, people will have to walk about a quarter-mile to ground zero where a small obelisk marks the exact spot where the bomb was exploded. Historical photos are mounted along the fence surrounding the national monument.

People also can ride a WSMR shuttle bus, for free, from Trinity Site to the Schmidt/McDonald ranch house, which is about two miles away. The ranch house is where scientists assembled the plutonium core of the bomb.
The bomb was tested at 5:29:45 a.m. Mountain War Time on July 16, 1945. Atomic bombs were then used to destroy Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, which brought an end to World War II about a month later.

The simplest way to get to Trinity Site is to enter WSMR through the Stallion Range Center gate, which is five miles south of U.S. Highway 380. The turnoff is 12 miles east of San Antonio, N.M., and 53 miles west of Carrizozo.
The Stallion gate will be open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors arriving at the gate will receive brochures about Trinity Site and will be allowed to drive unescorted to the site, which is about 17 miles away. The road is paved and marked.

Another way to attend is to drive with a caravan that will leave at 8 a.m. Saturday from the parking lot at the Tularosa (N.M.) High School football field. It is a 75-mile drive to the site from Tularosa and there are no services on the route or at the site.
The caravan will be escorted by military police once it gets onto WSMR land. The caravan will return to Tularosa between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m.

All adults will be required to show a photo identification card. Motorists are also reminded that all vehicles are subject to search by military police, and motorists should also carry proof of insurance and current vehicle registration documents.
No formal ceremonies will take place. However, food and souvenirs will be sold.
The official Trinity Site Web site is
