Inspiration Galore in Children’s Writers And Illustrators Conference
Is writing and illustrating for children your dream? New Mexican children’s writers and illustrators can find inspiration, how-tos, and fabulous networking with top New York editors, agents, and one another. It’s all at the annual conference on May 2nd and 3rd.
Writers and Illustrators are invited, regardless of skill level, to the annual Handsprings: A Conference for Children’s Writers and Illustrators in Albuquerque, put on by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, New Mexico Chapter (SCBWI-NM). Handsprings is packed with informative workshops by New Mexican authors and illustrators, plus plenty of time to schmooze. Handsprings also features an editor, an art director, and a literary agent. Writers and artists can download a brochure at the local website at http://www.scbwi-nm.org or write to SCBWI-NM, PO Box 1084, Socorro, NM 87801.
Featured speakers are Tim Gillner, Art Director at Boyds Mills Press, Alisha Niehaus, Editor at Dial Books for Young Children, and Literary Agent Rebecca Sherman of Writers House. Conference attendees can sign up for manuscript critiques with one of these children’s publishing professionals. Illustrators may also schedule portfolio reviews. "This is a great chance to make a personal connection with an editor, agent or art director," says Chris Eboch, SCBWI-NM regional advisor and author of The Well of Sacrifice. Agent/Editor/Art Director consultation submissions are due by April 4th. It is important to get manuscripts and picture book dummies in as soon as possible as slots fill up fast.
New Mexico writers and illustrators will lead workshop sessions on topics ranging from picture books to teen novels and illustration. Kathleen Sparks, who is in book and production design at UNM Press, will discuss Publisher’s Responses to Illustrators’ Portfolios. Pamela Keyes, author of the teen novel The Rune of Zachary Zimbalist, will join a panel with her agent and editor (Niehaus and Sherman), whom she will be meeting for the first time. Four other award-winning authors will give workshops: Kersten Hamilton, author of 28 books for children, including Red Truck; Uma Krishnaswami, who has published picture books and novels, including Chachaji’s Cup; Vaunda Micheaux Nelson, a librarian and author of Almost Freedom and other books; and Neecy Twinem, author/illustrator of over 26 books, including Hungry Beasties for toddlers.
This year’s conference includes the traditional Friday night party. Gillner, Niehaus, and Sherman will critique first pages of manuscripts. Participants can send a 200-word maximum first page of a book along with their registration form. Partygoers will also have time to meet and network with other local writers and illustrators, and to view the Illustrator’s Display. Librarians, teachers and the general public are welcome to attend this event and meet local authors and illustrators. The Friday evening party costs from $15 - $20.
The Handsprings Conference will be held at the UNM Continuing Education Conference Center. Early bird registration deadline is April 18th. Prices range from $90 - $150 for Saturday, depending on membership status and registration date. Bookworks will provide a book sale on Saturday. Conference goers can also bring new books to donate to John’s Shelf at the UNM Children’s Hospital, for children fighting cancer.
The sponsoring organization, the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators (SCBWI) is an international organization with more than 18,000 members. New Mexico is home to 200 of those members. Last year’s participants at Handsprings said, "Excellent conference! Lots of information, presented well. The weekend was worth the time and money."

Albuquerque, NM - March 24, 2008 Popejoy Presents and Broadway in New Mexico present the National Tour of Irving Berlin's I LOVE A PIANO, an enchanted, toe-tapping musical journey through Berlin's outstanding musical career, May 2-4, 2008 at Popejoy Hall. Audiences of all ages are sure to recognize songs they love as six talented performers sing and dance their way through Berlin's America. Tickets are $47.50 - $30.00.
Directed and choreographed by Ray Roderick and co-written with Michael Berkeley, Irving Berlin's I LOVE A PIANO celebrates the seven-decade career of Irving Berlin through the life of the one possession that knew him best: his ancient honky-tonk piano with one missing key. Through his piano and 60 hand-picked Berlin classics, audiences are treated to a unique view of American history, from the smoky, jazz-fueled speakeasy of the Roaring Twenties to the American patriotism of World War II and beyond. Featuring such classics as "God Bless America," "Puttin' on the Ritz," "Easter Parade," "Suppertime," "White Christmas," and "There's No Business Like Show Business."
Ray Roderick credits include associate director of A Christmas Carol at Madison Square Garden (directed by Mike Ockrant), as well as the recent revival of The Music Man. (directed by Susan Stroman) Other directorial credits include The Prince and the Pauper, I Love New York and regional productions of A Christmas Survival Guide, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, and Coming to America. With collaborator James Hindman, Roderick has formed Miracle or 2 Productions Inc., which is involved with producing new musicals.
 Alex LeFevre will return to his musical roots as musical director and conductor of this production. Born and raised in Newton, Alex attended the New England Conservatory. Sean Schwebke (Jim) A graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City, is a proud native of Santa Fe, New Mexico and thrilled to be making his national tour debut in I LOVE A PIANO.
Irving Berlin (music and lyrics) was born Israel Baline and immigrated to New York City in 1893 from Russia. Berlin started his career in a Chinatown café as a singing waiter, and in the decades that followed his humble beginnings penned over 1,000 songs which defined American popular music. Known for such patriotic ballads as "God Bless America," Berlin was a legendary and ardent supporter of his country, and in addition to his musical contributions to the war effort, was a generous supporter to the Army Emergency Relief, The God Bless America Fund (which he founded himself) and to the Boy and Girl Scouts of America. During his career, Irving Berlin wrote the scores to seventeen stage musicals (including the wildly popular and recently revived "Annie Get Your Gun") and contributed music to six more. Berlin died peacefully in his sleep in 1989 at 101 years old, after being celebrated just one year earlier by a star-studded musical tribute at Carnegie Hall.

Tonight marks the very first time that two of Albuquerque’s true jazz luminaries will appear together on stage. Both world-renowned jazz artists from Albuquerque, they each recently moved back after some 30 years away. As Doug Lawrence put it, “Bobby did his thing on the west coast when he split ABQ way back in the early 60s, and I did mine on the east coast when I split here in the late 70’s… now it’s come full circle… a sort of ‘Homecoming’. We’ve known about each other for quite some time and we’ve had a lot of mutual friends over the years. Needless to say, we are looking forward to this gig.” Trumpeter Bobby Shew is one of the most in-demand clinicians and concert soloists. Well known for his fiery bebop trumpet, he has performed and recorded with the elite of the jazz world for over three decades. A member of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, he also played with the Woody Herman band and the big bands of Della Reese and Buddy Rich. He became a prominent performer in Las Vegas for many years and later moved to Los Angeles where he played with Art Pepper, Bud Shank and Horace Silver. He did a great deal of studio work for TV shows and many soundtracks. Shew has recorded many of his own albums, including Heavy Company which won a Grammy in 1983. In addition to a busy performing and private teaching schedule, he is actively involved in conducting clinics and master classes at high schools and colleges around the world. Tenor saxophonist Doug Lawrence spent over 20 years as one of the most in-demand jazz musicians in New York City. As the lead tenor saxophonist with the World Famous Count Basie Orchestra, Lawrence continues to tour extensively filling the chair which has been inhabited by a virtual “who’s who” of saxophonists including Lester Young, Hershel Evans, Don Byas, Eli “Lucky” Thompson, Bud Johnson, Buddy Tate, Illinois Jacquet, Wardell Gray, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, and so on. He has performed and recorded with Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Nancy Wilson, Benny Goodman, Ray Charles, Rosemary Clooney, Jimmy Cobb’s Mob, Sarah Vaughan, Buck Clayton, Ella Fitzgerald, Roy Eldridge, Wild Bill Davis, Benny Carter, Bobby Short, Patti Austin, Grover Mitchell, The Smithsonian Masterworks Orchestra, George Benson and others. Lawrence has performed on six continents at virtually every major concert hall jazz club and jazz festival in the world and has performed for four American Presidents. He has appeared on over 100 recordings including four critically acclaimed recordings of his own. Rounding out the Doug Lawrence-Bobby Shew Quintet will be three of New Mexico’s finest jazz artists: Bob Fox, piano; Michael Olivola, bass; and John Trentacosta, drums. Opening the evening will be the talented Outpost Advanced Youth Jazz Ensembles which meets weekly, 30 weeks a year, under the direction of Outpost Jazz Education Coordinator and bassist/composer David Parlato.

Inpost Artspace highlights the works of four women artists living and working in New Mexico for the May exhibition: Molly Geissman, Holly Roberts, Debi Dodge and Emily Trovillion. Although diverse, each artist shares a desire to explore the physical and/or metaphysical in what is not always obvious to the casual observer. Molly Geissman’s work is primarily non-objective, brightly colored abstracts, conveying a sense of spontaneous action while contemplating a greater sense of being; Holly Roberts’ mixed media paintings catalogue montages of everyday life immersed in a kinetic body of abstract expression; Debi Dodge will be exhibiting monotype prints along with encaustic works inspired by her travels and observations of the natural world, and Emily Trovillion’s surrealistic compositions provide a landscape where she explores esoteric character mythologies and ruminations of the natural world. Songwriter/musician Kate MacLeod’s songs have been recorded by artists from California to the Czech Republic. A performer, studio musician, and leader of master classes and workshops, she is best known for her original songs and her unique fiddling style. Hailed as one of the “Ten Acts to Watch” by editors of the MusicHound Folk Essential Album Guide, Macleod is often compared to Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith and Richard Thompson. Based in Salt Lake City, she has been recognized as an outstanding artist by the Utah Arts Council and has been voted best lyricist, best folk/acoustic musician, best fiddler, best bluegrass, and best solo act in the annual Salt Lake City Weekly Reader’s Poll. Her songs have been featured on syndicated radio shows including A Prairie Home Companion, River City Folk, and the holiday program hosted by Judy Collins, Peace on Earth. A fine interpreter of songs by artist such as Bob Dylan, Jean Ritchie and Jack Hardy, Macleod also performs traditional songs from the British Isles and North America. Since 1995, she has released five studio recordings while also touring to Austria and throughout Europe. Her most recent CD, Breakfast, with her band The Pancakes, was released in 2005. Opening the concert will be Santa Fe-based singer-songwriter, painter, sculptor, jewelry maker, potter and massage therapist Martha Reich, who was a finalist in the 2006 New Mexico State Fair Talent Showcase. She has released two CDs, including The Color of Blue and her recent, Evidence of Life. She is joined by “transgalactic electro-cellist” Michael Kott, a professor of cello at the College of Santa Fe with whom she has been performing throughout New Mexico.

ANNUAL BIKE SWAP:
Following is information about BikeABQ's annual Bike Swap being held on Saturday, May 3, 2008. If you have bicycles or bike gear to sell or you are looking to purchase, this is a good place to find a wide variety of new, barely used, used, beater, and sometimes vintage bicycles, parts, clothes, etc. for all ages, sizes, and riding purposes. There are knowledgeable volunteers available to help adjust seats and discuss fit and such the day of the sale.

BikeABQ's annual bike swap will be held on Saturday May 3, 2008 from 10am-4pm at Sport Systems (1605 Juan Tabo NE on Juan Tabo just south of Indian School).
If you have gear to SELL bring it to be checked in at Sport Systems on:
Thursday May 1st from 10am-6pm or Friday May 2nd from 10am-6pm
Bike experts will be available to give advice on how to price items. Pick up unsold merchandise or proceeds on Saturday May 3rd at 4pm. There is a $1 check-in fee per item and a 17% commission on sales that funds bike advocacy programs.

The Albuquerque Museum’s
24th Annual Car Show
Sunday, May 18, 2008

One of Albuquerque’s largest car shows takes place every May at The Albuquerque Museum of Art & History.
On Sunday, May 18 car lovers will gather for the 24th Annual Albuquerque Museum/New Mexico Council of Car Clubs Automobile Show. Hundreds of antique, classic, exotic and sports cars will be on display in the museum parking lot along with trucks, motorcycles and vintage camper trailers. The car show this year will also be celebrating 50 years of Edsel and 100 years of GM with a special award for top GM and Edsel cars.
Admission to the one-day car show is free and each year it attracts thousands of spectators. Visitors are also welcome to experience art and history treasures inside the museum, including a special model, toy vehicle and auto art exhibition in the Museum’s Special Events Room.
Admission to the museum is: $4 adults ($1 discount to NM residents), $2 seniors, $1 children 12-4. Children 3 and under are free. Admission is free Sunday morning 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and on the first Wednesday of the month.
The cost to display a vehicle is $10.00. Registration takes place from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. on the day of the show. Participants do not have to be a member of the New Mexico Council of Car Clubs to show vehicles or to be eligible to win any of the 80 trophies.

Celebrate Heritage Day at Casa San Ysidro

In the Village of Corrales
Casa San Ysidro will celebrate Heritage Day 2008 with entertainment and artist demonstrations on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
This partially reconstructed nineteenth-century home is an important link to the history of New Mexico. As part of the Heritage Day activities the public is invited to tour the rooms of Casa San Ysidro. Inside the adobe walls visitors will find Spanish Colonial furniture, authentic handwoven floor coverings, hand forged iron tools, an impressive loom made in the late 1700s and a New Deal-era hand carved chair. Museum docents will be on hand to answer questions and share the history of this special house.
The grounds surrounding Casa San Ysidro will be filled with weaving and carving demonstrators, children’s art activities, churro sheep and bread baking in a traditional horno.
The Historic Old Church, located across the street from Casa San Ysidro, will also have activities in honor of Heritage Day. Admission to both facilities is free on Saturday, May 17.
Directions to Casa San Ysidro: Take Corrales Road north 3.2 miles, turn west on Old Church Road, the house is just around the bend. For more information call 898-3915 or 243-7255.
