THE WAIT IS OVER!
Monty Python's Spamalot, Tony Award Winner, Best Musical 2005 is coming to Albuquerque!
Albuquerque, NM - November 20, 2007 The Tony Award-winning Best Musical of 2005, Monty Python's Spamalot, comes to Popejoy Hall for 8 performances, June 10-15, as part of Popejoy Presents, Broadway in New Mexico series sponsored by Sandia Resort and Casino and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico.

Lovingly "ripped-off" from the internationally famous comedy team's most popular motion picture, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Monty Python's Spamalot is the winner of three 2005 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director (Mike Nichols), as well as the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards for Best Musical.

The original cast recording of Monty Python's Spamalot recently won the 2006 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The national touring production continues to do record business across North America, a London production opened last fall to rave reviews at London's Palace Theatre, a Las Vegas production opened at Wynn Las Vegas in the spring of 2007, and a Melbourne, Australia production was recently announced to open at Her Majesty's Theatre in December 2007.
Directed by Mike Nichols, Monty Python's Spamalot features a book by Eric Idle, based on the screenplay of Monty Python and the Holy Grail by Monty Python creators Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin, with music and lyrics by the Grammy Award-winning team of Mr. Idle and John Du Prez. Casey Nicholaw is the choreographer.

Monty Python's Spamalot is produced by Boyett Ostar Productions.

Telling the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and their quest for the Holy Grail, Monty Python's Spamalot features a chorus line of dancing divas and knights, flatulent Frenchmen, killer rabbits and one legless knight.

Set and costume design for Monty Python's Spamalot is by Tony Award-winner Tim Hatley, lighting design is by Hugh Vanstone and sound design is by ACME Sound Partners. Others on the creative and production teams include David Brian Brown (Hair & Wig Design), Gregory Meeh (Special Effects Design), Elaine McCarthy (Projection Design), Joseph A. Campayno (Make-Up Design), Larry Hochman (Orchestrations), Glen Kelly (Music Arrangements),

Todd Ellison (Musical Supervision and Vocal Arrangements), Michael Keller (Musical Coordinator), Peter Lawrence (Associate Director), Tara Rubin (Casting) and Gene O'Donovan (Production Manager).

Mike Nichols has been acclaimed as one of the great American directors in film, theater and television. He has won the Academy Award and eight Tony Awards. He recently received the Directors' Guild of America Award for Lifetime Achievement as well as a DGA Award for the direction of the HBO adaptation of Angels in America.

Aside from his work with Monty Python in films and on TV, Eric Idle has written a West End play; Pass the Butler, three novels, including The Road to Mars, The Rutles - A Mockumentary and many songs too rude to mention. He has sung opera, acted in movies, appeared on television and crossed America performing comedy on The Greedy Bastard Tour. His diary of his 15,000 mile journey by bus was recently published by Harper Collins and his long awaited sequel The Rutles2: Can't Buy Me Lunch was released by Warner Video in March. There's no saying what he might do next...

John Du Prez has composed over 20 feature film scores including A Fish Called Wanda, A Private Function, The Meaning of Life, Personal Services, UHF and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I, II & III. He has worked with Eric Idle since 1978.

Monty Python isn't a person, but a group of British actors and writers (and one American) that performed their famous comedy show, Monty Python's Flying Circus, on the BBC from 1969 to 1974 with subsequent international fame and success.

Tickets for Monty Python's Spamalot are $75-$37.50. Patrons may purchase tickets by calling (877) 664-8661. Tickets are sold at UNM Ticket Offices at the UNM Bookstore, Central and Cornell and the UNM Arena (The Pit), University and Avenida César Chávez. Bookstore location hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10 am to 6pm and Saturday from noon until 4pm. The Pit location hours are 8:30 to 5pm Monday through Friday. Tickets may also be purchased through UNM by calling 925-5858 or by visiting the UNM ticketing website at http://www.unmtickets.com. Tickets are also available at select Albertson's locations in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Rio Rancho.

Workshop participants get to keep three

Saturday & Sunday, June 7 & 8- Pottery Workshop by Michael Kanteena
Part I & II 10am to 2pm each day @ the Visitor Center Form and paint pottery pieces using traditional Mimbres designs.

Reproduction of Pre-Colombian classic black-on-white pottery is Michael
Kanteena’s specialty. A graduate of ENMU in Portales, Kanteena has perfected his pottery technique for over 12 years. Behind each piece are hours of research into the culture and history of  the early Puebloans, conducted by Kanteena and wife, Cynthia.  After hours of labor, some pieces are intentionally broken then glued back together to make them look  like ancient pottery. If it weren’t for his signature on the bottomof each piece, people might believe these were artifacts recently
discovered in an archeological excavation. Petroglyph National Monument is pleased to offer the public a chance to work with Michael and learn his techniques of pottery making in this two part workshop. On Saturday, participants will build their own piece of  pottery using traditional methods. On Sunday, participants will return to paint
the pieces they created the day before. The cost of the workshop is $50. All materials and pottery firing will be provided by Mr. Kanteena.
A portion of the instruction fee will go to support future public programs at Petroglyph National Monument. Advanced registration required.

Call 899-0205 x332 to register. Participants must commit to both days.

and learn the ancient techniques of flint knapping, the American Indian art of making stone tools and projectile points. Workshop fee of $35 includes personalized instruction and all the tools and materials necessary to make arrowheads and points. For over 20 years Luther Rivera has made the tools of our American Indian ancestors using traditional materials such as obsidian (volcanic glass) and deer antler. In 2001, Rivera was honored with the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Award; received a Forest Service Award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture; and received an Achievement Award from the Archaeology Society of Albuquerque for making historically accurate American Indian tool reproductions. Rivera’s award-winning
obsidian arrowheads, spear points, and bone tool reproductions are on display
at museums throughout the southwest. Please wear long pants, a hat, and sunscreen as this workshop will be held outdoors on the visitor center patio. Registration required. To register for this workshop  call 899-0205 x332. Bring water and lunch.

Saturday & Sunday, June 21 & 22—Cultural Demonstrator Darris Lovato
of Santo Domingo Pueblo 10am to 4pm @ the Visitor Center. Darris will demonstrate the craft of weaving turkey feathers and rabbit fur into blankets. Darris learned the rare craft of hand weaving feathers into blankets from his mother, Caroline Lovato.
By soaking turkey feathers in water to soften the quills, each feather is twisted around cordage. The long strands of feather cords are tightly interwoven to create a feather-light but warm blanket. Darris also creates turquoise and shell in-lay jewelry including necklaces, bracelets, and earrings.

The visitor center is located on Unser Blvd. NW at Western Trail.
Please call 899-0205 x332 for more information on any of the above listed programs.

In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein

The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History

June 8, 2008 – September 7, 2008

The art of Ernest Blumenschein (1874-1960) is celebrated in the comprehensive exhibition In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein.  Opening Sunday, June 8, with a reception and programs from noon to 4:00 pm at the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, In Contemporary Rhythm will present 61 major paintings, as well as five illustrations and sketches of Ernest Blumenschein, one of the founders of the Taos Society of Artists and one of the most accomplished of the group.  The exhibition opening events include a lecture at 1:00 pm by Elizabeth Cunningham that introduces the exhibition through exploring key works and periods in Blumenschein’s life and career, a book signing for the exhibition catalogue, special tours of related collections of the museum, and family art activities.

The story of Ernest Blumenschein begins in 1898 when a fateful painting trip to New Mexico found a young Blumenschein and fellow artist, Bert Phillips, stranded with a broken wagon wheel outside the remote village of Taos.  So impressed were the two by their adventures they made plans to make it home.  While Phillips would return the following year, it would take Blumenschein over twenty years to settle permanently.  In the intervening years an art colony developed and eventually formed into the Taos Society of Artists.

Ernest Blumenschein, born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1874 and raised in Dayton, Ohio, was an academically trained painter, an accomplished violinist, and a respected illustrator and teacher during his life.

His early attraction to the Southwest was cultivated as an illustrator for magazines and books which explored the plight of Native Americans. He would take up these same themes in his paintings, first portraying Native Americans as cultural symbols and later advocating for their rights.

Blumenschein is remembered for his appealing, life-like paintings of New Mexican landscapes and people.  But he was also an artist engaged with current trends. He challenged himself artistically whether it was writing a review of the most important modern exhibition of his time, forming a group of experimental painters, or exhibiting alongside the period’s modern American artists.

In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein features paintings, illustrations, and sketches, from early academic through mature works exploring concepts of modernism.  The exhibition was organized by The Albuquerque Museum, the Denver Art Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum.  In Contemporary Rhythm opens at the Albuquerque Museum, will then be at the Denver Art Museum from November 8, 2008 to February 8, 2009, and closes with exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum from March 15 to June 14, 2009.
