Spanish Champs Day Camps

The most dynamic camps in town - in any language!

The camps are great way for your child to have an immersion style Spanish experience. The camps are part of the two year Spanish Champs learning sequence. Campers use music, stories, crafts, games, contests, skits and plays to learn Spanish.  Space is limited to 12 children per camp.

The first two camps are excellent preparation for children entering Bilingual or Dual Language programs, or for children that have had Spanish, but still need more practice with basic communication skills.

The third camp is for children who have had one to two years or more of non-intensive Spanish, or for children who have had a year or more in a Bilingual/Dual Language program and are ready for/learning basic reading and writing skills.

Camp one introduces and reinforces basic Spanish: greetings, numbers, colors, food, and clothes. Children will be exposed to several key verbs.  Children perform several songs and contests for parents at the end of the week.

Camp two expands beyond the basic Spanish of camp one, and the children will be preparing for and acting in a play at the end of the week. A great follow-up for camp one.

Camp three is taught primarily in Spanish and is focused on increasing oral proficiency and beginning literacy. Children will write and illustrate a storybook in Spanish.

All Summer Camps: 1pm - 4pm daily

The cost of each camp is $150 ($135 for early registration).  Registration opens in April.

Location: Approximately Tramway and Academy

July 7-11: Beginners with little or no comprehension. Age 5-10

July 14-18: Beginners with some comprehension - (cont. of camp 1). Age 5-10

July 21-25: Intermediate with good comprehension of basics. Age 6-11

In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein

The Albuquerque Museum of Art and History

June 8, 2008 – September 7, 2008

The art of Ernest Blumenschein (1874-1960) is celebrated in the comprehensive exhibition In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein.  Opening Sunday, June 8, with a reception and programs from noon to 4:00 pm at the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, In Contemporary Rhythm will present 61 major paintings, as well as five illustrations and sketches of Ernest Blumenschein, one of the founders of the Taos Society of Artists and one of the most accomplished of the group.  The exhibition opening events include a lecture at 1:00 pm by Elizabeth Cunningham that introduces the exhibition through exploring key works and periods in Blumenschein’s life and career, a book signing for the exhibition catalogue, special tours of related collections of the museum, and family art activities.

The story of Ernest Blumenschein begins in 1898 when a fateful painting trip to New Mexico found a young Blumenschein and fellow artist, Bert Phillips, stranded with a broken wagon wheel outside the remote village of Taos.  So impressed were the two by their adventures they made plans to make it home.  While Phillips would return the following year, it would take Blumenschein over twenty years to settle permanently.  In the intervening years an art colony developed and eventually formed into the Taos Society of Artists.

Ernest Blumenschein, born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, in 1874 and raised in Dayton, Ohio, was an academically trained painter, an accomplished violinist, and a respected illustrator and teacher during his life.

His early attraction to the Southwest was cultivated as an illustrator for magazines and books which explored the plight of Native Americans. He would take up these same themes in his paintings, first portraying Native Americans as cultural symbols and later advocating for their rights.

Blumenschein is remembered for his appealing, life-like paintings of New Mexican landscapes and people.  But he was also an artist engaged with current trends. He challenged himself artistically whether it was writing a review of the most important modern exhibition of his time, forming a group of experimental painters, or exhibiting alongside the period’s modern American artists.

In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein features paintings, illustrations, and sketches, from early academic through mature works exploring concepts of modernism.  The exhibition was organized by The Albuquerque Museum, the Denver Art Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum.  In Contemporary Rhythm opens at the Albuquerque Museum, will then be at the Denver Art Museum from November 8, 2008 to February 8, 2009, and closes with exhibition at the Phoenix Art Museum from March 15 to June 14, 2009.

Blumenschein and Modernism
Jerry Smith, Associate Curator of American Art at Phoenix Art Museum
In his time, Blumenschein was a highly successful artist known for his support of modern artists and exploration of modernist ideas.  In recent years, however, his work has rarely been considered outside of a conservative, Western American tradition.  Join Jerry Smith as he discusses Blumenschein's ongoing dialogue with modernism.

Jerry N. Smith is an Associate Curator of American Art at Phoenix Art Museum and author of "Modernism and the Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein," included in the exhibition catalogue, In Contemporary Rhythm: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein.  His dissertation for the University of Kansas titled   "Auto-America: The Automobile and American Art, c. 1900-1950 is slated for exhibition in Phoenix in 2011.  Smith is currently working on a pending exhibition and publication Cezanne and American Modernism, with the Montclair and Baltimore Museums.

Sunday July 13
1:00 pm
Taos Transformations: The Art of Ernest L. Blumenschein
Peter Hassrick, Director of the Petrie Institute for Western American Art at The Denver Art Museum
Join Hassrick as he explores the relationship between Blumenschein and the artists of the Taos colony in 1910s and 1920s as they developed their vision of a new American art.

Director of the Petrie Institute since 2005, Hassrick’s past positions including director of The Russell Center at the University of Oklahoma, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Wyoming.  Over the years, he also published numerous academic articles and books, taught at the university level, and lectured extensively.

Sunday August 10
1:00 pm
Taos Artists and the Defense of Native Rights
Skip Miller, Archaeologist, Wallowa-Whitman National Forest
Taos artists painted during a turbulent time for their Native American friends and neighbors.  Governmental controls on traditional and religious practices were affecting communities throughout the nation.  Explore the variety of approaches these artists took towards raising awareness and advocating for the rights of Native Americans.

Miller is an archeologist, writer, educator, museum professional, and an art historian with expertise in Native American art and the art and cultural history of the American West.  Formerly he was director and curator for the Taos Historic Museums which operates the Ernest L. Blumenschein Home and Museum.  Miller is currently the archeologist for the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in northeastern Oregon and lives in Joseph, Oregon with his wife Elizabeth Cunningham, a writer and art historian.

July 19 & 20 10am to 4pm Spanish Colonial Tin Punch Demonstration at
the
visitor center (Unser at Western Trail)
Jason Younis, a Santa Fe native, learned the art of tinsmithing from
his

grandmother Angelina Delgado Martinez. Today, he continues the craft of

five family generations, participating in local and regional shows and

craft fairs. Most of Jason’s tools were given to him by his
grandmother but

he also makes punches to reproduce the designs of 17th century Spanish

Colonial tinwork. Jason’s designs, incorporating his own unique
imagery,

are drawn from traditional family patterns and historical Spanish
Colonial

tinwork.
