OUR PERSONAL DEFENSE: A NATUROPATHIC LOOK AT OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
Presented By Wendy Van Dilla, ND
Saturday 12/06/2008 at 4:00 pm
Albuquerque Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage store and event hall
The human body is superbly designed to fight a wide variety of attacks
on our health. Inflammation is our primitive internal defense against
injury and infections. Our more sophisticated defenses involve white
blood cells that make antibodies, which activate the immune system when
there is a re-infection, or help eliminate damaged or misbehaving body
cells. When we overload our immune system with stress and pollution,
we may develop immune disorders: allergies, autoimmune diseases, or
cancer. Learn how to support your precious defense system for faster
recovery and disease prevention.

Children will rotate through various stations that focus on different aspects of being fit and healthy. We will have a wide variety of options, allowing the children to choose activities that are most interesting to them, including an obstacle course, sports radar gun station, electronic bike races, and art projects.
Presidential & National Fitness Testing:
Our friendly and supportive staff will take the children through nationally recognized & developmentally appropriate fitness testing. We will encourage all the children to do their best and everyone will receive a participation award.
Our goal is to have all the children walk away with a positive attitude toward their health. Each child will receive a completion certificate for his or her participation in the presidential challenge and a patch for those that meet the presidential level.

Love the Bosque? Then you'll love A Field Guide to the
Plants and Animals of the
Middle Rio Grande Bosque!
Meet some of the contributors to the field guide
and hear a presentation about the book
this Wednesday, December 10 at 7 p.m.
Hello from Bookworks!
If you love walking, running, biking or hiking in the Bosque, you need the new book by UNM Press, A Field Guide to the Plants and Animals of the Middle Rio Grande Bosque.
Penned by biology researchers at the University of New Mexico including Jean-Luc E. Cartron, David C. Lightfoot, Jane E. Mygatt, Sandra L. Brantley, and Timothy K. Lowrey, this is a first-of-its-kind book that provides an informative and in-depth guide to identifying plants and animals in the nature-rich ecosystem. A Field Guide to the Plants and Animals of the Middle Rio Grande Bosque provides nearly 400 pages of information, features 800 color photographs and descriptions of more than 700 plants and animals in the Middle Rio Grande Bosque.
This authoritative guide reveals the important role of a unique riverside ecosystem. As the first of its kind for the Middle Rio Grande Bosque, the guide provides an invaluable resource for land managers, teachers, students, eco-buffs and nature enthusiasts.
Bookworks will have a special event with the book's contributors THIS WEDNESDAY, December 10 at 7 p.m. Come and hear more about the creation of this exciting new guide, and get your copy! You'll have plenty of time to peruse it before spring comes. These books also make fantastic gifts for nature lovers!
Can't make it to the event? Call us at 344-8139 to order an autographed copy.
Read on for more NEWLY ADDED January events!
[size=+0]
Events for December, 2008:
Tuesday, December 9 at 7 p.m. - A Very Special Evening to Remember and Celebrate Tony Hillerman's Life and Work
Please join us at Bookworks for a remembrance and celebration of Tony Hillerman, who was not just a great writer, but a great friend of Bookworks. We are inviting some special friends of Tony's to share their remembrances of him with us that evening. Refreshments will be served and we will also have many of Tony's books - including some autographed copies - available for purchase. Tony was an eminent figure in the New Mexico author community and his presence is sadly missed. Don't miss this celebration of his life and work at Bookworks.
Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. - Luci Tapahonso reads from her new book, A Radiant Curve (University of Arizona Press, $35 hardback, $17.95 paperback)
In this sixth collection of stories and verse, award-winning writer Luci Tapahonso finds sacredness in everyday life. Viewing a sunset in a desert sky, listening to her granddaughter recount how she spent her day, or visiting her mother after her father's passing, she finds traces of her own memories, along with echoes of the voices of her Navajo ancestors. The collection also includes an audio CD of the author reading aloud and her voice is warm and inviting, like the "simmering soup and blue corn meal" of her childhood.
Tuesday, December 16 at 5:30 p.m. - Howard Bryan reads from and discusses True Tales of the American Southwest: Pioneer Recollection of Frontier Adventures and his other books on New Mexico history from Clear Light Press
The author of books such as True Tales of the American Southwest; Robbers, Rogues and Ruffians, Wildest of the Wild West; and The Incredible Elfego Baca, Howard Bryan is a New Mexico historian with an incredible depth of knowledge about our region and its people. Come hear him speak about his books and some of the experiences he had writing and researching them.
COMING UP IN JANUARY, 2009 (More events TBA.):
NEW EVENT! Tuesday, January 6 at 7 p.m. - Courtney Humphries discusses and signs her book, Superdove: How the Pigeon Took Manhattan...And the World (Collins, $24.95).
Why do we see pigeons as lowly urban pests and how did they become such common city dwellers? Courtney Humphries traces the natural history of the pigeon, recounting how these shy birds that once made their homes on the sparse cliffs of sea coasts came to dominate our urban public spaces. While detailing this evolution, Humphries introduces us to synanthropy: The concept that animals can become dependent on humans without ceasing to be wild; they can adapt to the cityscape as if it were a field or a forest.
Superdove simultaneously explores the pigeon's cultural transformation, from its life in the dovecotes of ancient Egypt to its service in the trenches of World War I, to its feats within the pigeon-racing societies of today. Because of their fecundity, pigeons were symbols of fertility associated with Aphrodite, while their keen ability to find their way home made them ideal messengers and even pilots.
Their usefulness largely forgotten, today's pigeons have become as ubiquitous and reviled as rats. Superdove is the fascinating story of the pigeon's journey from the wild to the city-the home they'll never leave. Courtney is a former Albuquerquean who now lives in Boston.
NEW EVENT! Thursday, January 8 at 7 p.m. - Woody Tasch discusses his book Inquiries Into the Nature of Slow Money (Chelsea Green Publishing, $21.95)
We must bring money back down to earth.
Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money presents the path for bringing money back down to earth-philosophically, strategically and pragmatically, and with an entrepreneurial spirit that is informed by decades of work by the thousands of CEOs, investors, grant-makers, food producers and consumers who are seeding the restorative economy.
The months and years ahead will surely see a flood of books proposing micro- and macro-economic fixes to the financial crises of the day. Inquiries into the Nature of Slow Money brings a different vision-a meta-economic vision, looking above the top tine and below the bottom line, a new way of seeing what is going on in the soil of the economy.
The soil of the economy? Bringing money back down to earth?

Living in London while his wife serves as a military attaché at the American Embassy, recently retired Santa Fe Police Chief Kevin Kerney gets an early morning phone call that changes everything and sends him hurrying home to his New Mexico ranch. Riley Burke, his partner in a horsetraining enterprise, has been mowed down on Kerney's doorstep by an escaped prisoner cutting a murderous swath through New Mexico.
As the killings mount, Kerney teams up with his half-Apache son, Lieutenant Clayton Istee of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, to hunt for a psychotic murderer with a growing appetite for blood, who has no intention to be taken alive.
Thursday, January 15 at 7 p.m. - Levi Romero reads from and signs his new book, A Poetry of Remembrance: New and Rejected Works (University of New Mexico Press)
"Levi Romero is a strange kind of wizard. He can walk up a New Mexico arroyo and come back with a mysterious object full of quotidian magic. Like a rusted tobacco can the grand-fathers used to roll their smokes. And when you pry open the lid, you can hear their laughter and gossip coming out. That's what he does in poem after poem. I read his work and I learn again how to love this life."--Luis Alberto Urrea
Through familiar details--leaking faucets and lowriders, chicharrones and chicken coops--Levi Romero remembers familia, comunidad, and tradiciones from his upbringing in northern New Mexico's Embudo Valley. Alongside his training and jobs in the building trades and the architectural profession, and now a teacher, his writing has maintained and nurtured his connection to the unique people and land he knows so well and that have seldom been represented in American poetry.

Earth set for full moon close-up
The moon will appear high in the night sky
A full moon is set to occur closer to the Earth on Friday evening than it has done for the past 15 years.
The Moon's elliptical orbit means its distance from the Earth is not constant.
It will be a little over 350,000km away as it passes over the northern hemisphere, which is about 30,000km closer than usual.
If the sky is clear it will appear brighter and larger than usual, say astronomers.
Closest path
Friday's full moon could appear up to 14% bigger and 30% brighter than other full moons this year, Nasa said.
The Moon's orbit is elliptical, meaning it does not follow a circular but rather an oval path.
It is currently approaching the point where this oval orbit is nearest to the Earth.
"It's only every few years that a full moon happens to coincide with the part of the Moon's orbit when its closest to the Earth," said Marek Kukula, an astronomer at the UK's Royal Observatory.
"What people will see is a full moon that's really bright and a bit bigger than what they're used to."
It will appear largest as it rises and sets, but this is a psychological illusion, Dr Kukula said.
"When it's close to the horizon, our brain interprets it as being bigger than it actually is, this is called the moon illusion," he said.
"The size may be striking when it's near the horizon," said Robert Massey of the UK Royal Astronomical Society.
However, he cautioned against expecting too much.
"The Moon may be brighter and may appear somewhat larger, but it's really quite hard for the eye to notice the difference; the eye will compensate for the extra brightness, it's not like going from night to day," said Dr Massey.
The Moon's brightness varies throughout its annual cycle, during the mid-winter in the northern hemisphere it can appear brighter simply because it is higher in the sky.
